Aghdam is a city in southwestern Azerbaijan, located in the Karabakh region near the Armenian border. It was once an important agricultural and industrial center during the Soviet era, known for its wine production and silk manufacturing. However, during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict of the 1990s, Aghdam was severely damaged and much of it was abandoned, becoming a ghost town. In recent years, as Azerbaijan has regained control of the region, reconstruction efforts have gradually begun with the aim of restoring its historical and cultural status. The city is surrounded by a wealth of monuments, such as mosques and ancient tombs, which attract history buffs.
Aghdam is situated in the plains of Azerbaijan and has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Its strategic location makes it an important hub connecting neighboring cities.
Aghdam's cultural heritage, such as the Juma Mosque, remains attractive despite the obvious remnants of the war. Reconstruction plans include the development of tourism infrastructure, which may in the future become a site for exploring the history of Karabakh.
