Volcán del Ruiz, Colombia: a natural wonder of an active volcano
Located in the Andes Mountains of west-central Colombia, straddling the departments of Caldas and Risaralda, about 40 kilometers from the cities of Manizales and Pereira, Volcán del Ruiz (Machín Volcano) is one of the most active volcanoes in Colombia, rising to an altitude of about 5,321 meters. The layered volcano is known for its historic eruptions, and its catastrophic eruption in 1985 led to the destruction of the town of Américo, killing 23,000 people and making it one of the worst volcanic disasters of the 20th century. Today, Machín Volcano and the surrounding area are included in Los Nevados National Park, with glaciers, alpine lakes, and rich ecosystems, making it a popular destination for hiking, birdwatching, and geological expeditions. Despite continuous monitoring of volcanic activity, its magnificent volcanic landscapes and unique natural environment continue to attract visitors from all over the world to explore and demonstrate the majesty and power of nature.
