Mariinsky Posad is a small city in the Chuvash Republic of Russia, located on the right bank of the Middle Volga River, about 36 kilometers from the capital, Cheboksary. The city was founded in the 17th century as the village of Svyazhsk and renamed in the 18th century in honor of Maria Alexandrovna, the wife of Tsar Alexander II. As an old settlement on the banks of the Volga River, it has preserved 19th-century wooden buildings, Orthodox churches (such as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), and traditional craftsmen's workshops, reflecting the cultural landscape of Central Russia.
