Ruzayevka is an important city and transportation hub of the Republic of Mordovia, Russia, located about 500 kilometers southeast of Moscow. The city is situated on the banks of the Insar River and has a population of about 47,000, with the railroad industry as its core economic pillar. Its name derives from the local 18th century landowner Ruzayev, and the city was officially founded in 1932.
Ruzayevka is located in the central part of the Eastern European Plain and has a temperate continental climate with cold and snowy winters and warm summers. The city is an important node on the Moscow-Kazan railroad line, with a large grouping station and a locomotive maintenance base, and is known as the "Railway Gateway of Mordovia". The railroad industry provides a large number of jobs in the region.
In addition to the railroad industry, Ruzayevka has developed machine building, food processing and other industries. The city has preserved the industrial architecture of the Soviet period, as well as a museum of local history, an Orthodox church and other cultural facilities. Railwaymen's Day is celebrated annually, reflecting its close connection with the history of the railroads.
