Makhachkala is the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, located on the west coast of the Caspian Sea, and is an important economic and cultural center of the North Caucasus Federal District. The city was founded in 1844 as "Petrovsk Port" and was renamed in 1921 in honor of the revolutionary Makhach Daghadayev.
Makhachkala is situated on the Caspian Sea coastal plain and has a temperate continental climate with a population of about 600 thousand people. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Russia, with dozens of ethnic groups, including Avars, Dalkins, and Kumyks, and a mix of Islamic and Orthodox cultures.
The city's economy is based on oil processing, machine building and port logistics, and it has one of the largest ports on the Caspian Sea, Makhachkala, which connects Central Asia with Transcaucasia. The city is connected to the North and South Caucasus by a network of railroads and highways, and the airport offers regular flights to Moscow and other major cities.
There are remains of a 19th century fortress in the city, and the Dagestan Historical Museum contains valuable artifacts from the Caucasus. The sandy beaches and spa resorts along the Caspian Sea attract tourists, and traditional handicrafts, such as carpets and knife-making, are included in the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
