Demir Kapija is a city in the northwestern part of the Republic of North Macedonia, near the capital city of Skopje, in the Polog region. The city is known for its agriculture and trade, and the surrounding area is rich in tobacco, grapes and other crops, with a strong traditional market culture. The name Demir Kapija originates from the Ottoman period, meaning "Iron Gate", and was historically an important node in the trade routes connecting the Balkan Peninsula.
The city is situated along a tributary of the Vardar River, surrounded by hills and plains, and enjoys a continental climate with warm summers and cool winters. According to the latest data, Demir Kapija has a population of approximately 45,000, with a predominantly Macedonian population, as well as Albanian and other minorities, making it a multicultural city.
The economy is based on agriculture and small and medium-sized manufacturing, with local wines and handicrafts. An annual folklore festival in the summer attracts visitors to experience traditional music and dance. The city retains remnants of Ottoman architecture, such as old stone bridges and mosques, and the nearby mountains are suitable for eco-tourism and hiking.
