Djibouti City, the capital and largest city of the Republic of Djibouti, is located on the west coast of the Gulf of Aden in northeastern Africa, on the south side of the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, where the Red Sea enters the Indian Ocean, and is known as the "strategic gateway to East Africa". As the political, economic and cultural center of the country, the city has a population of about 600,000, accounting for more than half of the country's total population.
Djibouti City is located in a tropical desert climate zone, hot and dry all year round, surrounded by volcanic landscapes and salt lakes. Its geographic location is highly strategic, as it is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with a natural deep-water harbor that is an important access point to the sea for landlocked countries such as Ethiopia. The city hosts several foreign military bases, including safeguarded bases for China, the United States and France.
The city's economy is based on port services, logistics and entrepot trade, and the Port of Djibouti is one of the most important modern ports in East Africa. The city's architecture is a blend of Arabic and modern design, with the central market, the Hammoudi Mosque and the People's Palace as typical sights. Despite its small size, the city plays a unique role in global geopolitics as an international shipping and military stronghold.
