Introduction to Gitega, Burundi
Gitega is the political capital of the Republic of Burundi, located in the central plateau region of the country, about 62 kilometers away from the former capital of Bujumbura.In 2019, the government of Burundi officially moved the capital functions from Bujumbura to Gitega, marking its emergence as the administrative center of the country.
Geographic location and climate characteristics
Gitega is located in the western side of the East African Rift Valley, with an altitude of about 1,500 meters above sea level and a tropical highland climate, with an average annual temperature of about 20℃. Surrounded by rolling hills and tea plantations, the city has a beautiful natural environment and is one of the important agricultural production areas in Burundi.
History, culture and economic industry
As the historical and cultural center of Burundi, Gitega has cultural facilities such as the National Museum and traditional dance performance venues. The economy is mainly based on agriculture, producing coffee, tea and other crops, and handicraft production is also a local specialty. In recent years, the government is gradually promoting the infrastructure construction and modernization of Gitega.
Tourism and Transportation
Tourists can visit the Gitega National Museum to learn about the history of Burundi, or go to the surrounding tea plantations to experience the farming culture. At present, the city is connected to Bujumbura by highway, and there is no international airport for the time being, mainly relying on Bujumbura International Airport for external transportation.
