Located on the western side of the city of Kaohsiung in Taiwan, China, Gushan is one of the earliest developed areas of Kaohsiung, deriving its name from the Shou Shan (commonly known as Drum Mountain) within its boundaries. The area is bordered by Yancheng District to the east and the Taiwan Strait to the west, and boasts an important harbor area for the Port of Kaohsiung, historically known for monuments such as the Dog Fighting British Consulate. Gushan District contains neighborhoods with colonial-era architectural features such as Harmasin and Whistling Ship's Head, as well as well-known landmarks such as Xiziwan Scenic Area and Sun Yat-sen University. It has become an urban area that combines history and culture, harbor landscape and higher education functions.
Gushan District is rich in cultural tourism resources: Xizi Bay is famous for its sunset seascape and natural reef clusters; the Taogou British Consulate Residence, built in 1865, is Taiwan's oldest surviving modern Western building; and the hiking trails that run through the district offer a panoramic view of Kaohsiung Harbor. The Hamasin neighborhood preserves the remains of the railway tracks from the Japanese colonial period, and the Barge 2 Art Special Zone has been transformed from an old warehouse into a cultural and creative base. The Gushan Ferry Station connects to the Qijin Peninsula and is an important hub for experiencing Kaohsiung's harbor.
