Magdalena is a border city in the Mexican state of Sonora, located in the northwestern part of the country, bordering the U.S. state of Arizona, and situated in the Sonora Desert. The city's economy is based on mining and agriculture, and the surrounding area is rich in copper resources, and traditional handicraft production is also quite distinctive.
Magdalena has an arid climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The city is surrounded by typical desert vegetation, and the Río San Ignacio flows through the area creating oases that support local irrigated agriculture. Its location makes it one of the most important nodes for trade along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Magdalena retains its colonial architecture, with the Santa Maria Magdalena Church being the city's landmark. The annual St. Francis Festival, held in October, attracts large numbers of visitors and showcases traditional music, dance and crafts. The surrounding natural landscape includes desert hiking trails and ancient mining ruins for ecotourism and cultural exploration.
