Marion Island is a sub-Antarctic island of South Africa located in the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 2,200 kilometers from Cape Town. As part of the Prince Edward Islands, the island is managed by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and is a globally important ecological reserve and scientific research site.
The island covers an area of 290 square kilometers and was formed by volcanic activity. The terrain is predominantly mountainous, with the highest point being 1,230 meters above sea level. The climate is cold and windy, with an average annual temperature of about 5°C. The island is exposed to strong westerly winds all year round, and the vegetation is dominated by mosses and lichens.
Marion Island is an important habitat for seabirds, seals and penguins and has a unique sub-Antarctic ecosystem. South Africa has a meteorological and biological research station here, which permanently monitors climate change, marine ecology and species conservation, and is particularly well known for its ecological restoration programs to eradicate invasive species such as house mice.
There are no permanent residents on the island, and researchers are only allowed to stay for short periods of time. As a Special Nature Reserve, all activities require the approval of the South African government, and the focus is on preserving its pristine ecosystem, a model of conservation under the International Antarctic Treaty system.
