Introduction to Old Road Town, St. Kitts and Nevis
Old Road Town is a historic coastal town on the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Kitts, located on the southwestern coast of the island. The town gets its name from the old road that connected the sugar plantations to the harbor during the early colonial period and was once an important hub for the sugar trade.
Old Road retains a strong West Indies flavor, with colorful wooden buildings, old stone churches and the ruins of abandoned sugar cane mills. One of St. Kitts' earliest developments, the town dates back to the British colonial period in the 17th century and is surrounded by a number of beautifully restored plantation estates.
Today, Old Road Town is known for its tranquil beaches and traditional fishing port, where visitors can experience the life of local fishermen and sample fresh seafood. Black sand beaches such as Banana Bay on the outskirts of the town are popular for snorkeling and sunbathing, while the nearby Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a World Heritage Site, attracts history buffs.
Conveniently located about 15 minutes from the capital city of Basseterre, the town is an ideal starting point for exploring the history, culture and natural beauty of St. Kitts.
