Sadr City is a large residential area in the eastern part of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Originally known as "Revolutionary City", it was renamed after 2003 in honor of the Shiite religious leader Muqtada al-Sadr. It is one of the most densely populated areas in Baghdad, mainly populated by Shia Muslims, and was first built in the 1970s as a government-planned housing project, but has since developed into a residential, commercial, and religious community due to the post-war situation. After many conflicts, the area has been gradually restored with schools, hospitals and markets, making it an important livelihood area in Baghdad and an important center of Shiite political and social activity in Iraq.
