Located in eastern Bhutan, Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the country's most remote and pristine sanctuaries, established in 1993 and covering a total area of 650 square kilometers. Located in the eastern section of the Himalayas, the Sanctuary is situated at altitudes ranging from 1,400 to 4,900 meters above sea level, and the terrain encompasses alpine meadows, coniferous forests, glaciers, and river valleys, which create a unique ecosystem. It is home to rare species, including the snow leopard, Himalayan Thar sheep, brown bear, red panda, and a variety of bird species, as well as the Bhutan butterfly, an endemic species of Bhutan. The reserve is not only a biodiversity hotspot, but also preserves the traditional nomadic culture of eastern Bhutan, where the Brokpa people live in harmony with nature through animal husbandry. As a place where Bhutan's philosophy of "high value, low impact" tourism is practiced, Sakten strictly controls the number of tourists and is committed to balancing ecological preservation with cultural heritage, making it an ideal place to explore the secret and untouched nature of the Himalayas.
