Silistra is an important city in northeastern Bulgaria, located on the southern bank of the Danube River, across the river from Romania. As the capital of the Silistra region, the city has a long history and a strategic geographical location.
The history of Silistra dates back to the Roman period, when it was an important military fortress. The city retains the ruins of its Roman walls and medieval fortresses, the most famous of which is the Roman Mausoleum built in the 4th century, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List. The Ottoman-era buildings such as mosques and hammams show a multicultural mix.
Today Silistra is an important river port and agricultural center of Bulgaria, famous for its viticulture and winemaking. Built along the Danube River, the city has beautiful riverside walks and parks, where modern buildings coexist harmoniously with historical monuments. The International Folklore Festival held every summer attracts many tourists to experience the local traditional culture.
Visitors can visit the Silistra Historical Museum, the Roman Ruins Park, and take a cruise on the Danube to enjoy the scenery on both sides of the river. The city is also surrounded by the Srebrenica Nature Reserve, an important habitat for the Dalmatian pelican, an endangered bird.
