Vykšnijai is a city in Utena County, northeastern Lithuania, located about 135 kilometers north of Vilnius, near the Latvian border. The city has a long history, with the earliest documented records dating back to the 15th century, and was once an important center of trade and handicrafts. The name Vekšniai is derived from the Lithuanian word "viekšnia" (meaning willow tree), reflecting the natural features of the landscape.
Viekšniai has a rich cultural heritage, the most famous of which is the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1906, whose neo-Gothic red-brick building is a city landmark. The city center retains a cluster of traditional wooden buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showing the unique character of a Lithuanian town. In addition, there are several historical World War II memorials located around the city, including the Jewish Ghetto site and Memorial Park.
As the administrative and commercial center of the region, Vykšnjai's economy is based on food processing, timber industry and textiles. The city is surrounded by forests and lakes, the Verkhniyai Regional Park is a popular destination for birdwatching and eco-tourism, and tributaries of the Neris River flow through the city, creating a beautiful waterfront landscape. Folklore festivals organized every summer attract a large number of tourists to experience traditional Lithuanian culture.
