Introduction to Chabuchar Siber Autonomous County, Xinjiang, China
Located in the western part of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, on the southern bank of the Ili River Valley, Chabchal Sibe Autonomous County is the only autonomous county in China in which the Sibe ethnic group is the mainstay. The county was founded in 1954, and its name "Chabchal" means "granary" in Sibe language, reflecting its advantages in agricultural resources.
Geography and Cultural Characteristics
The capital is about 15 kilometers away from Yining City, with a total area of about 4,430 square kilometers. The traditional culture of the Xibo ethnic group is well preserved, including intangible cultural heritages such as the Xibo language, archery and shamanic dances. The Westward Migration Festival (April 18th in the lunar calendar) is the most important traditional festival of the Xibo people, commemorating their migration from the northeast to Xinjiang in the 18th century.
Economic Development and Tourism Resources
The economy is mainly agricultural, producing rice, wheat and melons. In recent years, tourism has been actively developed, with major attractions including the Sibe Ethnic Museum, Jingyuan Temple, and the Ili River Wetland. Local specialties such as Xibo big cakes and flower dishes are popular among tourists, making it an important destination for experiencing diverse ethnic cultures.
