Zhongsha Islands is an administrative division under the jurisdiction of Sansha City, Hainan Province, China, located in the central waters of the South China Sea, consisting of numerous dark sands, reefs and underwater terrains, mainly including the Zhongsha Great Atoll, Huangyan Island and other key landforms. Located in the tropics, the area is rich in marine resources, with unique coral reef ecosystems and fishery resources, which are of great significance in safeguarding China's sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea.
The Zhongsha Islands are administratively managed by the People's Government of Sansha Municipality, and most of the daily affairs are conducted through sea patrols and remote monitoring. As most of them are underwater dark sands, there are no permanent residents, but their surrounding waters are traditional fishing grounds where Chinese fishermen have long operated. In recent years, China has strengthened scientific research and environmental monitoring in the area to promote ecological protection and sustainable development.
As a strategic location in the South China Sea, the Zhongsha Islands play an important role in marine scientific research, resource exploration and national defense and security, while its pristine waters and biodiversity also attract academic attention. Visits require official authorization and are not open to general travel.
